He had a surf board, but really didn't know what to do with it. And he wasn't sure he trusted himself in the waves either. When the waves would come in, he would jump back and run away.

It takes more than a cup full of courage to really try to operate this thing.

I believe he's got it! He has figured it out and conquered some fear of the waves too.
