There is a story about the sultan who built the Blue Mosque.
He particularily wanted to have six minarets on his mosque, but
he was not allowed to have as many minarets as the mosque in Mecca.
He was so wealthy that he sent money to build another minarete on that
mosque bringing the total to seven so that he could have six minarets on his mosque.

It was originally bronze plated. Members of the 4th Crusade
removed the bronze to use in armor manufacture.
