The Pile Gate consists of outside and inside gates. The first with its Renaissance arch was built in the semicircular Pile Tower in 1537. The wooden draw-bridge was built over the moat at that time.

Meandering Path Between Gates

According to old chronicles, as far back as in 972, there has been some sort of fortification on this site to protect the only approach to the islet and the settlement on it. In 1461, the walls facing Pile were reinforced to double their previous size.
