Welcome to Tuscany
Day 15: Monday, April 25, 2005
If you arrive by ship, you start in Livorno.
Maybe it's 7:00 AM, like it was for us. |
Moby the Ferry
The Moby Line operates between Livorno and Olbia on the island of Sardinia.
They also have ports-of-call at Genoa and Civitavecchia among other ports in the area.
Livorno is a
new city
according to Angelika, our guide for the day. She said Livorno was founded in 1577, commissioned by the Medicis of Florence, who thus won an important access to the sea.
This is a major port exporting the Chianti wines and olive oils, among other important products produced in the region. Bertolli, producer of about 1/3 of the olive oil imported into the US is based in Lucca, which we will visit in a minute.
