The island, Tierra del Fuego — Land Of Fire — was named by the Spanish for the native campfires they saw along the shores, and for the active volcanos in the region.
Though things are pretty calm these days, Chile and Argentina have engaged in some heated discussions regarding the ownership of the land at the tip of South America. More is at stake than Tierra del Fuego and the region surrounding Cape Horn. The south is used as a staging point for Antarctic expeditions and both countries have made claims on large sections of the southernmost continent.
