Shakespeare's Birthplace Visitor Center We arrived late, after their closing time, but the volunteers gave us a warm greeting with champaign and strawberry shortcake. No pictures inside, please! The house and furnishings indicated that the Shakespeare family was somewhat affluent. William was born in April 1564, and his father was a prominent and prosperous alderman.
