The Imperial Nines

The Chinese emperors paid much attention to numbers. Nine being the highest digit in the number system made it the most important, and therefore imperial. Throughout the Palace Museum one sees the use of objects in the decorations in many places. The huge door pictured at left, is decorated with matrices of 9 X 9 large pegs. Similar doors are found at all the gates such as those pictured above, and most palace doorways. As you will see later, the corners of the roof eaves are also decorated with nine objects.
