Historical marker at Pagosa Springs
The marker commemorates the duel for the rights to the hot springs.
Pfeiffer fought a Navajo and saved the springs for the Utes.
Find the marker on US 160 near the Southwest edge of Pagosa Springs.
An interesting side-light to the story of the historical marker was that this writer
was in Del Norte from California to see the great-grandson of Col. Pfeiffer. We had
driven through Pagosa Springs enroute to Del Norte. The family was in Pagosa Springs
attending the dedication of the marker! Had we been aware of this, we could have
been there too.
