Beagle Channel

Day 16: Saturday, January 19, 2002

At first the weather didn't look too promising.

By 2:20 pm we were in heavy clouds that were pretty dark.

The Crows Nest, 2:35 pm

We went to the Crows Nest to have a look at the channel ahead.

The prospects seem brighter by 3:12 pm.

By 3:30 the water takes on that glacial blue-green cast.

It seems that glacial flour, the rock powder ground by glaciers, causes the water to reflect a light cyan to jade color. It doesn't seem to matter where the water is, or whether it's a lake, river, or salt water channel. (Of course, if too much glacial is being deposited nearby, the river will be very gray — muddy.
